This was our first time snowshoeing. I expected it be like trekking through a snowy forest for a couple of hours and gawk at the wildlife. It was kind of like that, but it turned out to be so much better. I borrowed some snow shoes from a friend and our friends rented a pair for David to use.

To begin we parked in a parking lot at the base of a little mountain in Lake Tahoe. We strapped on our snowshoes, bundled up in warm clothes, and started walking towards the base of the mountain. I was happily surprised by how easy it was to walk on the snow. Weeks before I joined a couple of friends on a snowy hike in the mountains, granted without snowshoes. It was fun, but an exhausting hike and we turned back after less than a mile. This hike was so much easier, about as easy as walking. The shoes leave an imprint in the snow but they distribute the weight so well that you barely sink in the snow.

Along the way we saw people skiing down the mountain! We weren’t the only ones blazing our own trail. Our goal was to make it to the view overlooking Lake Tahoe, so we started hiking up the mountain. In order to get there from our current spot, we had to slide down the side of one of the mountains, not a huge slide, but still a slide. It could have been scary if it was a big drop, but it was fun.

White blankets of snow covering everything, sprigs of green popping out of the snow, the lake glittering in the sunny afternoon

Once at the lookout spot, the view of Lake Tahoe was beautiful! White blankets of snow covering everything, sprigs of green popping out of the snow, the lake glittering in the sunny afternoon. It was quiet and peaceful. The sky was clear. We ate our homemade sandwhiches and enjoyed the next hour before we descended back to our car. I would definitely snowshoe again, and if we lived in a place that snowed, we’d probably buy a pair of our own! ♦
